Skinheads Oi! Oi!
The skinhead subculture is a very interesting and misunderstood one. Many people assume that skinheads are a racist bunch of stupid hooligans, but nothing could be further from the truth. As Richard Collins states, "Skinhead is more than a fashion statement, it's a way of life." The original Skinheads were British working class youth who tended towards more physical labor. The shaved head and steel toed boots have been said to have originated amongst dock workers who required the safety of steel toes and who shaved their heads as a precaution against head lice. After a hard day's work, the original Skinheads tended to dress in their most respectable clothing and congregate at the mostly Jamaican run dancehalls. They mingled with the West Indian community, many of whose members would be their workmates from the docks, and adopted Ska as the musical sound of choice. The high point of the original skins, sometimes identified as Trojan skins, was the summer of '69. The passage of time saw many Skins settling down , growing their hair out, and starting families with their girlfriends.
In the mid and late 1970's, along with the explosion of Punk Rock, there was a resurgence in skinhead culture. During this time, there was also a more violent turn as teens adopted the Skinhead look and took their love of soccer to a fanatical point. During this time the British Nazi Party and other minor racist organizations began recruiting their followers from the ranks of these football thugs and skinhead poseurs; thus, the boneheads came into being. Skinhead culture has continued into the 90's with many different offshoots and abominations of the culture.
Many different types of skinheads exist, but first of all a person is a skinhead. Other things, such as political beliefs come second. Just like there are people in the general populace who are racist and anti-racist, equally there are skinheads who hold racist and anti-racist beliefs. If something precludes someone from being a "real" skinhead, it is someone who becomes a skinhead believing that "real" skins are either specifically racist or anti-racist. It is true that some of the first skins were from Jamaica, and they were involved in crews with white English skins. Equally, however, some of the first skins were involved in what was loosely called the "APL" (Anti-Paki League) and it cannot be denied that both West Indian and English Skins were involved in - to use the term of the time - "Paki bashing." These combined crews objected to what they saw as the influx of alien cultures and beliefs to the UK which was "damaging their job prospects and personal values." So, "while skinheads, racists, and Neo-Nazis are not mutually exclusive, they are not necessarily inclusive..."
In the early days most crews of skinheads consisted of a crossrange of beliefs that included both racist and anti-racist views. However, most were skinheads first and political second; hence, respected each other. These are basically the values held by traditional skinheads. To traditional skinheads, politics is not a large influence on their lives, being a skinhead is the most important thing to them.
Another group of skinheads are those who are overwhelmingly anti-racist, often referred to as Sharps because the overwhelming number belong to this organization. In the late 1980's, a group of skinheads got together to form the first chapter of Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice. SHARP had three main objectives: to educate the public about true skinhead culture, to expose the bonehead impostors for what they really are and to drive the boneheads out of their communities by any means necessary. The New York chapter was quickly successful and soon chapters sprang up elsewhere as news spread. Many other anti-racist skinhead organizations also exist; along with skinheads who are independently anti-racist.
A third major group of skinheads are the racists, often referred to as Boneheads because many feel that they are an abomination of true skinhead culture because of the influence that blacks had on the original "skins". This sector is unfortunately the one that is given the most attention by the media. In this group, there may be elements who are familiar with true skinhead culture but just as often, this group includes skinhead poseurs, who have joined because of their misconception that skinheads are inherently racist. Another major group of racists are referred to as Hammerskins, a name adopted by some skinheads in reference to a segment in the Pink Floyd movie The Wall. During this segment, hundreds of skinheads march through the street and chase the "Pakis" (Pakistanis) out of England. Although the movie is largely opposed to that viewpoint, young skinheads were emboldened by the image of strength and came to call themselves Hammerskins because the images in the movie had heads in the shapes of hammers. Although there are racist skinheads, not all skinheads are racists, and this is definitely not the basis behind being a skinhead.
The unity within the skinhead culture mostly lies within the pride of the working class. Being a skinhead is about being working class and being proud of these two things. Skinheads like to express their working class background by their tough, clean style of dress. Skinheads want to work for everything they have because this is part of being working class. Race is not really supposed to be a dividing line within skinhead culture because being working class is the main aspect of skinhead culture, regardless of color. Political beliefs of skinheads may vary, but they are usually in support of the working class.
Within society a common misconception is that all skinheads are racists, this could not be farther from the truth. Race was never a major issue addressed by the original skinhead culture. This misconception is mostly the fault of mass media looking for a sensational story; they often misrepresented the skinhead culture implying that all skins were racist. Racist skinheads exist, but not all skinheads are racist.
Due to the media's portrayal of all skinheads as racist, many people joined the group for just that reason. Instead of exposing the evils of neo-nazi skinheads, the media caused a growth in this aspect of the culture. Racist elements have been present in the skinhead culture, but racism was never essential to skinheadism. As a result of the resurgence of racist skinheads, many anti-racist factions were formed. The most prominent was the S.H.A.R.P. organization, which stood for Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice. One of the main objectives of the SHARPs was and is to educate the public about true skinhead culture. This way they would combat the misconception caused by the media. The media was not concerned with the destruction they caused to a great culture and rather than expose the positive aspects; they over exaggerated the negative ones, until they seemed exclusive.
Another aspect that had a major influence on skinhead culture was football hooliganism. This was the fanatical following and support of English football (American Soccer) teams. Many times there would be violence at the matches, usually against the opposing teams. This was a serious epidemic that plagued the football matches of England and Skinheads were very often right in the middle of things. Constant battles between fans and cops occurred and much of this violence still continues today.
The political views of skinheads vary because skinheads are individual people. Some skinheads have no political preference and pride themselves on this. The politics of most skinheads is in favor of the working class because this is an important aspect of the skinhead culture. Most racist skinheads have belief in the politics of fascist or national socialist (Nazi) way of thinking. The politics of skinheads vary; so, there are many skinheads who have communistic or socialistic beliefs, among other things. So, the politics of skinheads vary across the field and are not restricted to the reactionary right way of thinking that the media portrays all skinheads as having.
The original skinheads were working class people who would dress in their best clothes and usually hang out at Jamaican bars. As a result, the original music preferred by skinheads was Jamaican Reggae and Ska. With the resurgence of skinheads during the punk movement of the 1970s, Skinheads adopted punk rock. As the movement progressed, Skinheads became disillusioned with punk because it was being invaded by college students and major labels. Because of this, a new form of punk labeled as Oi was developed. Oi expressed the problems that most working class youth faced; such as, unemployment, the ruling elite, and other things. This type of music was adopted and manipulated by many groups of skinheads. The white power boneheads changed Oi until it sounded closer to heavy metal then punk and other skins have done such things as infused punk and ska. These are probably the main forms of music associated with skinheads, but skinheads also listen to many other types of music.
The Skinhead culture is a very diverse one that is also unique. Within the culture there is a sense of unity and brotherhood that makes people seem very close. The media has exploited and tried to ruin this culture for its own means. It is sad that such a travesty has been allowed to occur, but it has; and people should learn about the real aspects of skinhead culture rather than making presumptions.
